Healthy Breakfast Ideas to Kick Off the New Year

We’ve all heard it: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast sets the tone for the entire day, gives you energy to get going and wakes up your metabolism. So why not make it an important part of the New Year?

Breakfast doesn’t have to be boring or take forever to make. Here are a few of our favorite recipes to start the New Year (and each new day) right.

Peanut Butter Overnight Oats

Oatmeal is a classic, but there are so many creative ways to jazz up your bowl.

This heart-healthy, gluten-free, and fiber-rich grain is a perfect way to start the day. A hearty bowl of oats will keep your blood sugar in check while keeping you satiated all morning long. Not to mention, it’s inexpensive.  The addition of peanut butter adds a healthy source of fat and protein.

We love overnight oats because it makes our mornings that much easier. Prepare a batch the night before and enjoy it at home or take it on the go. Tip: make a week’s worth on Sunday night and you’ll be set for the whole week.

Avocado Toast

…is all the rage. This breakfast also combines whole grains and healthy fats. Avocados are a great source of fiber and monounsaturated fats. Monounsaturated fat is considered an essential fat, meaning you can only get it from your diet; your body does not make it. This type of fat has been shown to have heart healthy benefits and can help lower cholesterol levels.

In terms of a breakfast, this is another easy one to whip up and take on the go. The creaminess of the avocado with the crunch of the toast is a match made in heaven.

Egg Muffins

Let’s not forget about good ol’ eggs. While there has been a lot of talk in the past about eggs raising cholesterol levels, the opposite may be true. An egg or two a day may have little effect on cholesterol levels, and eggs are a fantastic source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.

These egg muffins are quick to make, easy to eat, and pretty darn cute. It’s a great option for kids.
